Week 6/13 in Reading and Writing

8th grade, grades have no reached the cut off point. If there are any late assignments they will not be accepted. If students have any outstanding balances for books, they are asked to bring them or the cash fee this week. 

Graduation is June 17th at 10: 30 a.m. at the Logan Center. Graduates are asked to be at the center by 9:30 a.m.

Reading:

8th grade students will be practicing for graduation all week with Mrs. Patton and Mrs. Barton.

8th grade: students will read and analyze the article “Teenage Identity” to explain the article and connect it to their lives.

7th grade: students will read and analyze the story “Brink of Day” to explain the story. characters, and connect it to their lives. They will be answering text dependent questions associated with the story.

 

Writing:

Root words: port, rupt, scrib/script, sect, scope, techno, tele, therm

7th grade students will be given the final root quiz June 14th.

Homework:

Tuesday- Frayer models 2 or 4.

The final week of school June 20-21st will be the week of the picnic for the 7th grade students.

Week 6/6 in Reading and Writing

8th grade tickets (9) will be given on June 6th to each 8th grade student. There will be no additional tickets offered.

Reading:

8th grade students will be practicing for graduation all week with Mrs. Patton and Mrs. Barton.

8th grade: completing a choice board where they have to choose 3 activities from the board due by Wednesday June 8th. Literature projects due on Wednesday for a gallery walk. Exit slip on the skills of POV, central idea, and theme.

Reading records are due on June 9th.

7th grade: Continue their study of text features pgs. 977-984 all close reading questions for their unit test on the 10th of JUNE. Literature projects due on June 8th.

Reading records are due on June 9th.

Students will be given time to work on Nature vs. Nurture projects and play HANGMAN for the root quiz on June 14th.

Week 5/30 in Reading and Writing

I will be out June 2-3rd with the 8th graders on the DC trip: work is left for the students to complete.

Reading:

TheAlgebra Exit Exam is Monday May 30th. First period class will be prolonged due to this testing.

8th grade: Wednesday students will be analyzing poetry for its meaning and comparing the poems to their books as well as their literature books.

7th grade: Continue their study of text features pgs. 959-974 all close reading questions for their unit test on the 10th of JUNE.

Students will be left with the following work to complete while I am out on the DC Trip:

  1. Root word sentences and artistic representations
  2. Projects (both 7 & 8th grade)
  3. Write persuasive essays on extended school year.
  4. pg. 974-975 (7th)
  5. pg. 1036-1037 (8th)

Students will be getting new root words on Tuesday May 31st to complete graphic organizers for. The sentences for the words will be given and due on Tuesday June 2nd.

There is a text features quiz for the students will be Monday May 23rd.

 

NWEA is this week for both 7th and 8th: 24-26th, with makeups on the 26th.

This Week 5/16 in Reading and Writing

8th grade luncheon is this Friday May 20th. Spirit of Chicago 9~2 p.m.

Reading:

Students will be working on further study of text features as they are presented in informational texts. ALL ASSIGNMENTS ARE ON THE GRADEBOOK FOR THE ENTIRE QUARTER.

There is a text features quiz for the students will be Monday May 23rd.  We are continuing our study of text features this week with the passages:

The Weak Inherit the Gym – 8th

Emergency Procedures- 7th

Periods 3 & 4 will receive the Declaration of Independence and Emancipation Proclamation (7th) to compare them to their literature books. Literature quiz will be next week based on the pages they decide to read this week.

Writing:

Students will complete visual representations of root words on Tuesday.

Thursday students will spend some time playing BINGO with the words before working on their Nature vs. Nurture projects.

8th graders essay/article are due on Thursday. They will do a gallery walk of all the essays/articles.

This week 5/9 in Reading and Writing

First Happy Mother’s Day to all the 7-8th Grade mothers!!! We appreciate you!

Reading:

Students will be working on further study of text features as they are presented in informational texts. ALL ASSIGNMENTS ARE ON THE GRADEBOOK FOR THE ENTIRE QUARTER.

First period will be taking the REACH assessment for Reading. There is a text features quiz for the students on Friday for the 8th graders. Those attending the 6 Flags Trip will have to make up the quiz next week.

Periods 3 & 4 will receive their role sheets on Wednesday for their new literature books. They will have a quiz on the first 20 pages this Wednesday the 11th.

Writing:

Root words: min, mort, multi,pater, phil,phobia,photo, pseudo, psycho will be given to students 5/10. Graphic organizers will be due 5/12.

This Week 5/3 in Reading and Writing

Reading:

Periods 3 & 4 will receive their role sheets on Wednesday for their new literature books. They will have a quiz on the first 20 pages next Wednesday the 11th.

Root words: ject, jud, mal, mater, micro, mis/miso, mono, morph, nym were given to students 4/14. Students will be quizzed on the words on Tuesday 5/3.

7th grade students will be working together to study the root words as well as work on their nature vs. nurture project in class. Students from 4th period, signed up for a canvas and will receive them when their sketches are complete.

8th grade students first article/essay is due on Thursday. They have been working in class for the last two weeks on these articles/essays. There will be a gallery walk in class for students to read and view one another’s pieces. The students will have to have them printed and ready first thing on Thursday.

Reading:

Students will be working on further study of text features as they are presented in informational texts. ALL ASSIGNMENTS ARE ON THE GRADEBOOK FOR THE ENTIRE QUARTER.

Writing:

Root words: ject, jud, mal, mater, micro, mis/miso, mono, morph, nym were given to students 4/14, but the graphic organizer of the words are due for completion for 90%, since they will be considered late.

7th grade students will be working together to study the root words as well as work on their nature vs. nurture project in class. Students from 4th period, signed up for a canvas and will receive them on the 28th.

8th grade students will be will be working together to study the root words as well as work on their essays or articles (3-5 paragraphs) for the 4th quarter, first one due May 5th. Students topics are due April 28th.

4/4 Week in Reading and Writing

The PARCC starts today!

Monday:

ELA 1 9:00-10:40a

No testing on Wednesday, students will be finishing the work from 3/28 week with the Spiderman informational article and Titanic informational article and comprehension questions.

Thursday:

ELA 3 9:00-10:40a

Math 3 1:30-2:45p

No School on Friday 4/8 in preparation for Report Card Pick up on April 13, 2016. 

This week 3/28 in Reading and Writing

Reading:

The students will be working on comparing and contrasting of a text, audio, and video and reviewing central idea and theme. Students will write an article using the template in Google about the topic of the week: Chicago Fire (8th) Titanic (7th)

PARCC has been moved and will begin April 4th.

My grade book will be closing April 1st.

Writing

Greek and Latin roots are the focus for vocabulary instruction with the dictionaries every Tuesday for units 3 and 4.  The latin and greek quiz #3 is this Tuesday 4/5 on the root words below.

The students were given the following root words on 3/22:

Latin Roots: duct/duc, fac, form, fact, fract,

Greek Roots: hydro, hypo, logy, meter. 

Tuesday- Frayer model vocabulary due

This week in Reading and Writing 3/14 PI Day

Reading:

The students will be working on the basics, structure, and figurative languages in poetry for the next two weeks  starting 3/14. Students will write a number of 4 poems and choose the best one for a poetry slam in the classroom when PARCC is finished.  PARCC will begin March 28th.

Homework is the same for this week

Monday- Read nightly 30 min, Dialectical entries due, Study for ROOT WORD quiz.

Thursday- Reading log due

Writing

Greek and Latin roots are the focus for vocabulary instruction with the dictionaries every Tuesday for units 3 and 4.  Students will also be preparing for their third editorials (7th) and Speeches (8th) presentations on Thursday 3/17. The latin and greek quiz #2 is this Tuesday 3/15 on the root words below.

Thursday- 3rd Speech/Editorial due for presenting

This Week 3/7 in Reading and Writing

Reading:

The connection between point of view (POV) and its development by the author and character motivation will continue this week for in- depth study with the texts.  Students will be re-reading passages (Scholarship Jacket/Zebra 7th) and (Treasure of Lemon Brown/ Rules of the Game 8th) and answering close reading questions to determine the POV and the motivation connections with the text.  There will be a quiz on POV and character motivation on Friday, 3/11.

Homework is the same for this week

Monday- Read nightly 30 min, Dialectical entries due, Study for POV quiz.

Thursday- Reading log due

Writing

When students are finished with their assigned work they will be working on vocabulary activities to practice and study the Latin and Greek root words.
