This week in Reading and Writing 2/29

Reading:

The connection between point of view (POV) and its development by the author and character motivation will continue this week for in- depth study with the texts.  Students will be reading passages and answering close reading questions to determine the POV and the motivation connections with the text.  There will be a quiz on POV and character motivation on Friday, 3/4.

Homework is the same for this week

Monday- Dialectical entries, Study for POV quiz.

Thursday- Reading logs

Writing

Greek and Latin roots are the focus for vocabulary instruction with the dictionaries every Tuesday for units 3 and 4.  Students will also be presenting their editorials (7th) and Speeches (8th) on Thursday 3/3. When students are finished with their assigned work they will be working on Zaner Bloser assignments online.

Tuesday- Frayer model vocabulary

Thursday- speech and editorial due first thing when enter the classroom

Important Dates to Remember for 3rd Qtr.

Hi,

I hope that your child has given you the 3rd quarter letters that went out Monday, Feb. 8th. If you have visited the grade book lately you will find all of the assignments entered in the grade book for the 3rd Quarter. The dates of the assignments are based on school days and closures. Students in 4th period will have bi-weekly literature circle quizzes to assure that students are comprehending what they have read as well as ensure that they have actually read the pages their group agreed upon.

Below are the dates that students received about the due dates for assignments, projects, and such.

  • Feb. 10th – Literature quiz #1 – first 20 pages.
  • Feb. 18th- first editorial presentation
  • Feb. 23rd- Latin and Greek quiz #1 aud, bene, aqua, ambi, anthropo, auto, bio, chron,dys
  • Feb. 24th- Literature quiz #2
  • Mar. 3rd- Second editorial presentation
  • Mar. 9th- Literature quiz #3
  • Mar. 15th- Latin and Greek quiz #2 cent, circum,centra, dict, gram,graph, hetero,homo
  • Mar. 17th- Third editorial presentation
  • Mar. 23rd- Literature quiz #4
  • Mar. 24th- Final editorial (this can be the best editorial of the 3 or a new one).
  • Mar. 30th- Literature circle project
  • Apr. 5th- Latin and Greek quiz #3 duc,fac,form,fort,fract,hydro,hyper,hypo,logy,meter

Reading:

The connection between mood and connotation will continue this week in depth with the texts: Dark-Eyed and Drummer Boy of Shiloh. Students will be reading passages and answering close reading questions to determine the mood and the connotation connects with the text.

This week in Reading and Writing

This week students will be completing the NWEA test for Reading and Math. Classwork will be limited, homework assignments are still on schedule. Students will have time to retake quizzes and address areas of need when they complete the NWEA test. If needed make up and completion of the test will happen Wednesday and Thursday.

Tuesday- student research essays and Info Books due.

Wednesday- Periods 3 and 4 literature circle projects due

Thursday- Hard copy of research essay due with cover page, work cited page, and interesting facts.

Family Galley walk for Info Books (flyers will come home on Monday).

Friday- Reading Records are due. Students should have read 1,000 pages for an A for independent reading. My grade book closes, work will not be accepted after Friday for the 2nd quarter.

Next week in Reading/ Writing

Hi parents,

Today, Friday, January 8, students received their progress reports. Please be sure to ask your child about them.

8th grade:

Continuing the study of analyzing arguments. Students will have typing time in class for their essays due on the 26th. Students should have the first 7 paragraphs done for their outlines.

Additional Homework: Students will have to answer text dependent questions of the following articles.

Monday- Sprouting Off

Wednesday- Debate: Virtual Ed

Friday- Quiz with Cloning Around analysis with questions

 

7th:

Students will be continuing the study of comparing two or more texts. Students will have to complete the graphic organizers of venn diagrams or t-chart. They will also be comparing the text to the audio and video versions. For Writing, students should be working on their presentations and Info Books that are due on the 27th. The following week, they will present their presentations to a peer for peer feedback and editing.

Additional Homework: Students will have to answer text dependent questions of the following articles.

7th grade students will be analyzing two or more texts that address similar themes in order to build on knowledge and compare and contrast them. There will be a quiz on this Friday 01/08 (I will be out, but the students will have their quizzes ready for them.)

This week in Reading/Writing

7th grade students will be reviewing central idea and theme with the textual evidence to support with analysis of the evidence. They will have a central idea and theme unit test on Friday. Students will finish their quizzes on Wednesday from google classroom.

8th grade students will be working delineating arguments by analyzing claims, supports, and evidences. Expect to see students come home with homework on Monday and Wednesday for this skill. Students will have a quiz on this Friday. Students will finish their quizzes on Wednesday from google classroom.

Writing:

7th grade researching for government info book and watching CCTV documentary.

8th grade researching their genocide of choice and watching varies documentaries of the genocides.

 

7th grade homework:

This week in Reading and Writing

Period 1:

Students will be working on analysis of text for inferences vs. predictions. The students will be reading passages to do this analysis, along with central idea review. There will be a quiz on Friday for central idea and summary.

Writing: students will be completing their outlines with the research on genocides. Students will also be working on Zaner Bloser to practice compound sentences.

Period 2 & 4:

Students will be working on understanding the difference between the central idea and the theme of the passage. There will be deeper analysis about making themes universal, with the focus and review on central idea and summary. There will be a quiz on central idea and summary on Friday.

Writing: students will be completing the verb tenses work on Zaner Bloser and receiving the ins and outs about the Info Book project (the example and instructions will be posted  tomorrow). Students will receive various lay outs based on their choice for the Info Book.

Period 3:

Students will be working on analysis of the central idea, summary, and inferences that are in the text and providing more than one central idea for the text. Students will be on Zaner Bloser working on complex sentences as well as formatting their research papers for genocides.

8th grade:

The students are aware of their research papers and the requirements: below you will find the details of this, due on January 26th (soft copy) 28th ( hard copy stapled). NO late exceptions!!

1. Cover page (no pictures, but can have fancy lettering)

2. 3 pages or 15 paragraphs ( must include 2 complex/compound sentences per page= 6) (12- point font)

3. Work cited page

4. Most interesting facts page/power point (period 3)
